CIDR - Full Form and Overview
CIDR stands for Classless Inter-Domain Routing. It is a method for allocating IP addresses and routing Internet Protocol packets.
Full Form: Classless Inter-Domain Routing
Key features of CIDR:
Introduced in 1993 to replace the older system of IP address classes (Class A, B, C).
Allows allocation of IP addresses more efficiently without being restricted to class boundaries.
Uses variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) to allocate addresses based on arbitrary subnet (network prefix) sizes rather than predefined classes.
denotes IP addresses by a network prefix and host identifier rather than an IP class.
The network prefix is represented using CIDR notation e.g. 192.168.2.0/24 indicates the first 24 bits are the network prefix.
Routing is based on prefix blocks rather than IP class, allowing aggregation of routes to reduce routing table size.
Implemented using Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) across Internet backbone routers.
Facilitates scaling of networks by permitting optimized assignment of IP address space.
Enables Internet Service Providers to allocate address blocks tailored to customer requirements.
In summary, CIDR introduced flexible network prefix-based IP addressing and routing to replace the limitations of classful IP addressing. CIDR notation is now standard to represent IP addresses and their subnet masks concisely.
